Who is Arthur Morgan?
This is still a work in progress, so what I have written here isn't all I want to say or showcase. So stay tuned.
Born in the northern United States in 1863 as the only son to Beatrice and Lyle Morgan. Beatrice who would pass on after unknown causes and leave Arthur in the custody of his criminal outlaw father. When Arthur was 11 years old, in 1874, he would witness his father get arrested for larceny. Arthur would then go on to see his father's death, despite having a difficult relationship with him, he would continue to don his hat and keep a picture of him.
It wasn't until around 1877 when Arthur was found as a "wild deliquent" and picked off the streets by a group of outlaws, Dutch van der Linde and Hosea Matthews. The two stepping in as adopted father figures as Arthur grew up in the gang. The two men would go on teaching Arthur all the basics of life, teaching him to read, to shoot, hunt, fight, and ride. A little later, a Miss Susan Grimshaw would come along acting as a romantic fling for Dutch and subsequently stepping up as a tough mother figure for Arthur and for the gang.
When Arthur was a young man, he ended up meeting a girl named Mary Gillis. The two would fall deeply in love and even become engaed. Arthur befriended her younger brother Jamie, who Arthur would teach how to ride horseback. On the other hand, Mary would receive disapproval from the gang, such as Susan Grimshaw. However, Arthur's preference for his life of crime couple with the prevalent disapproval of Mary's family, most ardantly from Mary's father and ulimately forced their relatipnship apart, and the two would seperate between 1894 and 1899.
An infamous story would take place in the year of 1884 when Arthur was sent out fishing. He would come back very proudly with three beautiful basses. The gang threw him a large celebration to commend him with a big feast and endless toasts throughout the night. The following week or so, Arthur and Dutch walked into th local market where it was then revealed that he had simply purchased the bass from a fishmonger, all to his embarrasment. It gets mentioned in a mission called A Fisher of Men when you still accept to go fishing with Dutch and Hosea.
In 1885, a small 12 year old boy named John Marston would join the gang. Dutch had saved him from being lynched by a group of Illinois homsteaders. He would go on to be raised right along side Arthur, both growing close a kin to brothers even. Over time the two would be regarded as Dutch's favorite 'sons'
Around the year of 1887, Arthur would meet and sleep with a 19 year-old waitress named Eliza. She would eventually become pregnant due to this and give birth to a son named Issac. Eliza knew the lifestyle Arthur lived, yet she accepted his support with whatever he was willing to offer to their son. Arthur didn't want to promise anything he couldn't keep, but would still insist to do right by them. On and off he would try to pay a visit to the two of them at least every few months, usually staying a few days with them at aq time. Arthur recalls Issac as a 'good kid' in the chapter 6 mission during 'The King's Son'. Rain Falls would then cut him off to pick some ginseng. Tragically howeverm Arthur would arrive to their home and see the two crosses placed outside. He knew they were dead after that. And later it would come out they had been shot and killed by a few robbers, for ten dollars. Another thing to harden Arthur, never truly coping with this loss.
In the spring of 1899, the gang found themselves in West Elizabeth and decided to set up camp just outside a growing town called Blackwater. Folks would scope it out for a good deal of leads, including Arthur and Hosea who had found a real hefty real estate scam. In spite of this, Dutch had also found himself something, being supported by Micah. Dutch would begin planning to rob a ferry full of riches that was coming into town. Arthur and Hosea were very skeptical of this, thought it to be too risky for the gang. Dutch's plan was to carry out the robbery and then flee to the west, possibly to New Austin. Arthur and Hosea carried out their own plan the following day. Yet, unfortunately, the ferry heist did not go as planned. During the robbery, the gang would be amushed by the law, pinkertons, causing a wickedly large firefight known as the Blackwater Massacre. When Arthur and Hosea finally arrived back, they found their gang barely hanging on. Several of the gangs memebers were killed or seriously injured, and in an 'almighty scramble' they would all flee to the northen moutains in hopes of avoiding or losing the law. But Arthur suspected the whole gig was rigged to be set up.
